Change Orders: The Bane of All Construction Projects

Presented by:
Mike Cathcart and Bryan C. Jackson
Allen Matkins Leck Gamble Mallory & Natsis LLC

Be aware of how change orders affect owners, contractors, design professionals and others, and learn what you can do to protect your organization...

More disputes and lawsuits arise from actual or perceived changes in a construction project than for any other reason.

Contractors threaten work stoppages if they don’t get paid for additional work not in the original bid. Owners may insist that unknown conditions, extra features and an expanded project are covered by the original bid price. An unexpected condition on the site may create new work (and additional cost) that was not in the original bid. Many shop drawings, material specifications and other detailed plans are not known when the work is bid and can change the work involved in the project. These types of changes are the bane of the construction industry.

This program will provide valuable information on change orders, construction change directives, cardinal changes, abandonment, contract modification and managing change. You will gain a clear understanding of these concepts and how they apply to the owner, contractor, subcontractor, lender and surety.

This 90-minute DVD will teach you how to:

  • Recognize the 3 axioms of construction change
  • Identify typical change-order concepts and types of changes
  • Describe the role of the owner, architect, contractor, subcontractor, lenders and surety
  • Recognize causes of change
  • Explain total cost method and modified total cost method
  • Avoid or resolve change order claims and disputes
  • AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!
