BIM implementation has not expanded as rapidly as was projected five years ago. In 2008, in WPL Publishing's first annual BIM Roadmap series, early adapters of Building Information Modeling (BIM) recounted how its use was revolutionizing the way contractors, architects and owners do business — slashing project delivery time 25% (and sometimes more), cutting claims and change orders to near zero, saving millions of dollars in incorrectly specified materials and fixtures, slashing legal fees and reducing contractor liability ... and putting big smiles on clients' faces
.

Yet today, only a small fraction of construction and design executives are using BIM. Many continue to sit on the sidelines, scared off by presumed steep learning curves, high software costs, legal and contractual confusion, and fear of the unknown. This year's BIM Roadmap series is designed to help those still sitting on the fence to learn why they should start using BIM, along with practical steps they can start taking immediately. By the CD set for this series if you want to learn more about BIM implementation in your organization, including...

  • What the NBIM-US™ Standard Version 2, released in May 2012, will mean to you and how it will affect your BIM decisions going forward.
  • How has the reality of BIM played out versus the original visions; are the contractors and owners the primary beneficiaries, or do A/Es achieve an ROI as well?
  • Is it the technology or culture that is the bottleneck? Or are other factors holding us back?
  • How are the roles of the parties, and their relationships, being affected by the use of BIM? Is this a good thing?
  • Are certain types and/or sizes of projects emerging that make more sense for BIM implementation?
  • Are A/Es, contractors and/or CMs missing opportunities by not implementing BIM? Learn how public agencies in Florida and elsewhere are specifying BIM use in all phases of new projects, for example.
  • What are we learning about the skill sets and day-to-day usage and management issues encountered?
  • Learn how BIM-enabled projects allow the owner and contracting team to more easily achieve and document LEED goals as well as be in a better position to take advantage of newer building methods, products and equipment.
  • How necessary, or advantageous, is it to engage alternate delivery systems - IPD, D/B, early involvement, etc.
  • What is COBIE, what does it look like and why do you need to be conversant with it?

Enjoy this 4-part webinar series on how building information modeling (BIM) continues to evolve to help A/Es, contractors, CMs and owners realize major productivity gains. A/Es, contractors and CMs will learn how BIM investments can give your organization more opportunities and a competitive advantage. The increased collaboration between the owner and all other parties of the contracting team, supported with recently developed BIM contract documents, is moving complex construction into a more cohesive, collaborative team.

Session 4 - Facilitating the BIM Process: Contract Documents and Applying BIM in Traditional Delivery Methods

Session 1 •
Owner Expectations, NBIM-US™ Standard Version 2 to Accelerate BIM Usage over the Next Five Years

Your Instructor: Deke Smith, Executive Director, buildingSMART alliance, NIBS; Brigitta Foster, Assisting Director, buildingSMART alliance.

Many are now well into their Building Information Modeling (BIM) learning curve, more and more owners are becoming aware of the concepts and benefits of BIM, and many have even instituted BIM requirements in their projects. Through the use of standards and new integration tools allowing data to be more easily shared, owners are starting to benefit from a collaborative conceptual design process that is tantamount to a real-time constructability review process with contractor input. While BIM is the facilitator of this process, owners are recognizing that standards, along with BIM specific contract documents and specialized implementation guides, are converging to eliminate past stumbling blocks to BIM use. In Session 1 of the BIM Roadmap 2013 series, Deke Smith traces the trajectory of BIM development and shows how the NBIM-US™ Version 2 standards and other developments will continue to accelerate BIM usage.

Session 2 •
The Design Side: Meeting Owners' and Contractors' Expectations
Your Instructor: Cindy Baldwin and Alix Loiseau, ACAI Associates, Inc.

Savvy architects, engineers, design/builders, developers and construction managers are learning that opportunities abound for those who have invested in developing company capabilities in BIM.  Both private owners and public agencies are adding BIM clauses in their specifications, with full details and requirements starting at the design phase through to facilities management.  In addition to owner requirements, BIM affords A/Es productivity gains plus more flexibility to meet LEED and sustainability goals.

Join Cindy Baldwin and Alix Loiseau as they describe how ACAI has experienced substantial growth through use of BIM, including opening up new areas of services for owners, contractors and design firms, including:

  • BIM benefits to both A/E firm employees and their owner/contractor clients
  • BIM deliverables
  • Dealing with employee fears and expectations
  • Walking through a step-by-step process for BIM implementation
  • Understanding how various disciplines can be involved during the design and construction stages
  • New service lines to offer owner and construction clients

Session 3 •
Contractor Success: Putting BIM Tools to Work in the Field
Your Instructors: Benjamin Crosby, Yates Construction; Will Ikerd & Shelby Hirschburg, Ikerd Consulting

With BIM models and a game plan in place, contractors can then leverage project data during the construction phase. Learn how design/builders, contractors and CMs are using BIM and other technologies for coordination, logistics, clash detection, 4D-scheduling and project administration. Learn how contractors are using tablets and kiosks on the jobsite for ready access to drawings and schedules, and how devices and communication technologies are applied to keep the project team involved for problem solving and change control. In addition to the actual tools and benefits to contractors through increased use of information technologies in the field, our guest panelists will talk about the transitions project managers must make in their own management and administration processes, what new skills they should anticipate learning and how the jobsite communication and documentation process will evolve.

Session 4 •
Facilitating the BIM Process: Contract Documents and Applying BIM in Traditional Delivery Methods
Your Instructors: Carl Roberts, Partner, Ballard Spahr LLP; Leah Rochwarg, LEED AP BD+C, Partner, Seyfarth Shaw, LLP; Rebecca McWilliams, Esq., AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Associate, Donovan Hatem, LLP; Christof Spieler, PE, Director of Technology & Innovation, Morris Architects

BIM implementation is more than a simple clause in a contract that says to use BIM. BIM implementation poses a complex new set of risk allocation and management challenges.  Fortunately, the industry has caught up to the technology and several sets of BIM contract addendums and implementation guides have emerged from various organizations. Despite the new thinking required, BIM has been proven to be a better way of building, and is more likely to reduce claims and legal issues.  Join our legal team to learn how to match BIM usages, including model sharing, management and ownership, to the various project delivery systems commonly used today.

This is a great opportunity to hear from these experts who use BIM in their jobs every day and learn where BIM is today and where it is going.

Who Will Benefit From This Series?
Owners, contractors, construction managers and owners' representatives who want to gain a working knowledge of BIM and related information technologies in order to help their organizations begin realizing near-term and future benefits of Building Information Modeling opportunities and productivity gains.
