Forensic Schedule Analysis is the study and investigation of events using Critical Path Method scheduling techniques, sometimes supported by other analysis techniques, to determine the cause and magnitude of delays and disruptions on projects of various types. CPM scheduling was first developed in the mid-20th century to meet the management needs of more complicated development programs and construction projects of the post-World War II era.
Forensic Schedule Analysis grew as an offshoot of CPM scheduling as needs for such analysis arose. Its beginnings were sometimes messy and fitful, as is common to the development of new disciplines; however, continued vigorous practical and intellectual discussion has allowed Forensic Schedule Analysis to coalesce into a mature expertise where it is possible to discuss with certainty its prerequisites, objectives and methods. As a result, Forensic Schedule Analysis has now become its own distinct field of study and practice.
