Fritted Glass Saves Birds and Energy
According to an article in ConstructionDIVE, Kim Slowey reported that when birds encounter reflective glass, they perceive whatever is reflected in the glass and don’t see the glass itself and often attempt to fly through it, killing millions of birds each year. More birds died at the Jacob K. Javits Center than anywhere else in New York City, so when the Javits Center decided on a renovation, 8,000 reflective panes were replaced with fritted glass. Fritted glass features a pattern that is often imperceptible to humans but visible to birds, in addition to being efficient at reducing solar heat on the inside – a win-win for humans and birds alike.
