Panama Canal Expansion Project - 5 Years in 2 Minutes & 27 Seconds
The five-year Panama Canal Expansion project was officially inaugurated on June 26, 2016. The $5.25 billion project started construction in 2007, including a new set of locks on the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the water way and excavation of more than 150 million cubic meters of material, creating a second shipping lane and doubling the cargo capacity of the water way. The video here shows the last five years of the construction project.
For more information, visit the official Panama Canal Authority website. The Authority also has an extensive multimedia page with photos, animations, videos and live cameras. Check it out here. We especially like the animation "How it Works," which shows an overview of the entire canal and how the ship navigates through the various locks and lakes.
