Construction Blog Highlights

On a regular basis, we highlight content posted on other blogs that we feel would benefit our readers.  This week's blog highlights include:

NIBS Releases BIM Guide for Building Owners

The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) released its National BIM Guide for Owners last month. The document is “…a new guide that building owners can adopt to provide a documented process and procedure for their design team to follow in order to produce a standard set of BIM documents during the design and construction of the facility, and for maintenance and operations of the facility upon handoff.”  “The primary goal is to provide owners with a consistent reference for including BIM in contractual documents with their building project team,” according to the NIBS website.  Ultimately, NIBS wants to see the guide adopted as an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved industry standard.  Chris Wood, writing at the Construction Dive blog, points out owners have been late to implement BIM, and there’s still a disconnect between the design and construction teams.  Check out Wood’s post here.

Visit the NIBS site for more detail and to download the document here.  On the subject of BIM — don’t forget WPL’s upcoming BIM Roadmap 2017 series starting in just two weeks. If you have not yet engaged with BIM on your projects, whether you’re an owner, CM, GC or trade contractor, this exclusive 3-part webinar series will help you get started. Click here for more information.

How to Become a Project Manager

Shannon Menard provides a concise recap of what it takes to become a construction project manager at this week’s eSub blog.  Starting with a list of duties and responsibilities, Menard moves on to describe eight specific skills that a project manager should possess, such as time management and communications skills, as well as pertinent personal characteristics that help the PM be successful, including being a leader, team-oriented and having an assertive yet approachable personality.  For those who already serve as a project manager or construction manager, this is a handy checklist to keep you on track and remind you of various traits that might need renewed focus.
