BIMForum Releases 2016 Version of Its Level of Development (LOD) Specification

On October 19 the BIMForum released the 2016 version of its Level of Development (LOD) Specification.  It can be downloaded free of charge from www.BIMForum.org/LOD

The LOD Spec is a language that describes where a model element is on the path from vague concept to fully specified.  This language enables concise definition, at the individual element level, of complex BIMs, providing for clear specification of models for milestones, information exchanges, deliverables and the like.

Updates this year include:

  • Added graphic examples
  • Fully vetted precast concrete building elements, highway and railroad bridge elements (precast and steel), and pre-engineered metal buildings (these sections were pre-released last year as an appendix that was added after the public comment cycle)
  • Editorial review of the entire document for consistency
  • Addition of Omniclass and Masterformat numbers

The Spec is updated annually after going through a process of new content collection and vetting, existing content review and update, and public review and feedback.
